The strategic location of the castle made it a military stronghold and a royal residence. David I, son of Saint Margaret of Scotland, was the first to build a castle here in the 12th century. Over the centuries, the castle has been successfully and unsuccessfully besieged many times, making it one of the most attacked places in the world.

Throughout its history, ownership of Edinburgh Castle has changed hands between the Scots and the English. It was a favorite residence of the kings and queens of Scotland. The castle played a pivotal role during the Wars of Independence. Scottish independence in the fourteenth century. It was at the heart of many important historical events, including the Siege of Lange and the Jacobite Rising.

 

By the seventeenth century, its role as a royal residence had declined, and it had become a military barracks. The castle was a prison for soldiers during the two world wars. It has been the scene of many historical events, such as honoring Scotland and establishing the National War Museum of Scotland.

Edinburgh Castle remained continuously inhabited, with a military presence, until the late 20th century. It is now under the care of Historic Environment Scotland. The castle is a symbol of Scottish heritage and the pride of hosting the annual Edinburgh Military Festival.

The discovery of the castle was not a single event, but rather a gradual recognition of its importance over time. The city's builders and residents helped shape its history, leaving a legacy that continues to attract visitors from around the world.
